I received some messages from guys asking me why I would recommend using a free domain and a free hosting rather than one of the free blogger platforms like blogger.com or wordpress.com etc.
As for me, there are various reasons that speak for not using any of these free blogging platforms and as it is difficult to decide which one is the more important one, my reasons are the following without any specific order:
- Installation of Software
- Subdirectories or Subdomains
- Advertisement
For certain tasks it might be necessary to use additional software or to install a particular script, not to speak about the use of a database. Free blogging platforms don’t offer these features, which makes them useless for anything apart of content publishing.
The same is to to be said for the use of subdirectories and subdomains, which are sometimes useful to have for some particular tasks or also just for organizational purposes. As there is no hosting account going along with a free blogging platform, there is also no room for creating subdirectories or subdomains.
Not all free blogging platforms allow publishing of advertisements or forbid a variety of ad providers in their TOS. If monetization through ad placement is part of the business strategy, choosing these particular blogging platforms is rather useless.
Considering the above mentioned reasons, using a free domain and a free hosting is a good combination to begin with, as they provide the necessary features that are needed for a proper start.
Nevertheless, it is necessary to mention at this point that such a solution has disadvantages as well. Studying the TOS of these services you can find a statement like
“Company may, in its sole discretion, at any time and for any reason, terminate the Service, terminate this Agreement, or suspend or terminate your account.”
Usually a termnation won’t happen often, as long as you are acting within the TOS of the service and most of all keep the content clean and spam free. But to stay on the safe side, it is a good idea to use the first money earned for the purchase of a CNO domain name and a shared webhosting account.
But Google doesn’t love co.cc domains that much
This is something what I heard of before already, but I found this not to be true. For the advertisement of a certain product I tried the co.cc domains. The domain is currently ranked #3 in Google for its targeted keyword and bringing in steady sales every month since about half a year. With an average sale of $68 and a commission of 12% not that bad for a few hours of work.
So, just go ahead and start with a free domain and a free hosting, earn some money and invest in a CNO domain and a hosting account afterwards.
